Annie loves working for her new boss, Derek Nelson. He’s a hard task master but she finds his no nonsense style to be refreshing. The longer she works for him, the more she wants to please him.

It’s an indulgence and a risk she can’t afford to take. She meets their cousin Brett who is very close with both Derek and Ryan. She has no idea how close until she finds herself in a situation where they tell her what they want from her will not only bring her to her knees, but will take her into a world of pain and pleasure that can surpass anything she’s ever experienced.

  Chapter One

Annie squared her shoulders before pushing open her boss’s partially closed door. He had told her to come directly to his office when she returned from her meeting with personnel. This was her first day on the job and she was beyond nervous, as well as excited. The new suit jacket and skirt that she had paid way too much for gave her a boost of confidence as she walked into his office. However, he wasn’t alone. She took a few steps backward toward the open door to try and escape unnoticed, but both men turned to where she was standing. Embarrassed beyond words, she wished there was a hole for her to disappear into. The last thing she wanted to do was to make a bad first day impression by interrupting a meeting for no good reason because she hadn’t even thought to check Mr. Nelson’s calendar. A newly hired, low-level administrative assistant would know better than that.

“Mr. Nelson,” she stammered. “I’m so sorry, sir. I’ll come back later.”

Derek Nelson stood up from behind his desk to his full six feet and then some, looking every bit as intimidating as the first time she had met him when she interviewed for the position. He was all man, from the muscles that bulged beneath his crisp white shirt, to the broadness of his shoulders. She remembered being slightly stunned when she had first met him. His pictures, that portrayed a handsome man, did not do him justice in person. He was beyond handsome with eyes that were a light golden brown and sandy blond hair that fell across his forehead. When he looked at her, the way he was now, she felt her knees go slightly weak.

“I didn’t hear you knock,” he said with a slight reprimand in his deep voice. She could only imagine how he might sound and look if she ever really displeased him. The thought wasn’t entirely distasteful. Shaking herself mentally, she was about to apologize again when the man sitting in the chair gave her a smile and a wink.

“You must be Annie,” he said as he stood.

“You will have to get used to my brother dropping in unannounced. He has a bad habit of doing that on a pretty regular basis.” He looked toward the man who had just winked at her with an indulgent smile. “My brother, Ryan Nelson.”

“Mr. Nelson,” she said, walking toward him with her hand extended. There was no doubt they were related. Their resemblance was strong. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“Very nice to meet you, Annie,” he said, taking her hand firmly.

She continued to smile, but felt a slight jolt that seemed to vibrate through her body. She had to control her nerves or she was going to make a fool of herself. She hated that men still had the power to make her uncomfortable. She knew it stemmed from the fact she had been brought up in a house full of women who had homesch
ooled her, protecting her from a world that they had run away from. Her social skills had needed a lot of work then, and sometimes like now, she could feel that shy, introverted girl returning.

Removing her hand from Ryan’s, she took a step back. “Mrs. Rogers left me a list of items needing attention. I had thought, possibly, I would go over them with you to make sure I had my priorities correct. Again, I’m so sorry for interrupting. I’ll come back when you’re not busy.”

“When it comes to my brother,” Ryan said, using his brother’s words, “it’s always a good idea to have one’s priorities in order. He can be an exacting taskmaster.”

She felt an undercurrent between the two men, as if they were sharing a private joke. Derek wasn’t smiling as he eyed his brother with the same look of disapproval he had given her.

“You’ll have to forgive Ryan. We operate from different sides of the brain. If you ever saw his studio or watched him work, you’d know what I mean.”

“Touché,” Ryan said good-naturedly, picking up a bag next to the chair he had been sitting in. “We’re done here anyway. I have a showing of my work coming up in a couple weeks, and I have a lot to do. I’ll let you two get to your…priorities.”

Derek shook his head slightly. “Something I would imagine you should work on if you intend to keep to your schedule.” Looking at Annie, he said, “My brother’s a sculptor. You may know his work. He shows under R. N. Ruan.”

Annie wasn’t an art connoisseur by any means, but she would have had to live in a cave over the last few years not to have heard that name. His designs graced the lawns of the White House, as well as public parks in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago, to name a few. Somehow her research had skipped over his sibling. It was an important piece of information.

“Of course I’ve heard of you. I’m honored to meet you. Your work is spectacular.”

“Thank you,” he said quietly, as if embarrassed. It seemed a bit out of character considering his earlier boldness.

“Oh, and, Annie”—he stopped and turned—“you should stop by my studio sometime. I’d love to show you what I’m working on.”

She couldn’t keep the surprise from her voice. “Thank you. You’re very kind.”

“Not really. But I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of each other now that you’re working for Derek. Getting to know you better would be my pleasure.”

“Ryan.” There was a warning note in Derek’s voice.

“Well, you have to admit that she’s a far cry from Mrs. Rogers. I would have invited her to see my work, but I was afraid she might use it against me. You know…like hit me over the head with it. She was a formidable woman.”

“Goodbye, Ryan,” Derek said with a hint of steel beneath his voice.

  “As you command, big Brother.”

Annie watched Ryan saunter out of the office. He was as tall, maybe even taller, than Derek. He had the same sandy blond hair, except he wore it longer, and was dressed in jeans and a black T-Shirt that hugged his muscled chest. Physically, they were very much alike, but she had a feeling that was where it stopped. Derek was a business tycoon with companies all over the world, and from their interview and what she had read, he kept a tight rein on his companies. Ryan, on the other hand, appeared artsy and carefree. He wasn’t at all intimidated by his big brother. They were very different, but they were obviously close if Ryan dropped by to visit unannounced on a regular basis.

“Please sit down, Annie, and show me your list.”

Dragging her eyes away from the door, she walked over and sat down in the seat that Ryan had so recently vacated. It was still warm. For a moment she forgot all about the list as her body absorbed his heat.

Derek’s cough brought her thoughts quickly back to the task at hand. With an internal reprimand that warned her she wasn’t going to make it through her first day if she didn’t get a grip on her nerves, she handed the list to Derek. She watched as he read over it quickly.

“There are a number of meetings to be scheduled, but that shouldn’t take you long. She kept all my business contacts in a rolodex on her desk. Something that should be computerized.” He looked up into her eyes. “I’d like to see you bring this office into this century.”

She wanted to look away, but held steady, knowing she needed to be able to look her employer in the eye without breaking into a sweat. “I’ll see what programs she currently has, and if I need anything added, I’ll talk with the Technology Department. Mrs. Dennison, from personnel, said they would be able to help me set up my own email account, as well as giving me access to document sharing and your direct report’s calendars. She also mentioned that Mrs. Rogers wasn’t a fan of technology.”

“I know who Mrs. Dennison is,” he said impatiently.

“Of course you do,” she said, lowering her eyes and feeling a flush creep into her cheeks. Had she said something wrong? Maye he was still put out with her for interrupting his meeting with his brother.

“There is something that I would like to say in Mrs. Rogers’s defense, since my brother and Maria, or as you know her, Mrs. Dennison the Director of Personnel,” he said, emphasizing her title, “found her to be difficult at times. She was an excellent assistant who knew this company inside and out. She had been here for almost thirty years, and she felt she had earned the right to be, let’s say, a bit forceful with her opinions, as well as doing things the way she felt most comfortable.”

“Mrs. Dennison told me that Mrs. Rogers had retired to spend more time with her family,” she said, hoping to steer Derek away from having to defend his old assistant. It was a touchy subject, and she would be careful in the future not to say anything that would put the woman in a bad light.

“Yes. She has two daughters who are both expecting babies in the next month. She was quite excited.”

“I know it won’t be easy to fill her shoes, but I assure you I will do my very best.”

“I have no doubt that you will,” he said, handing her back the list. “You came highly recommended by your old boss, and Maria thought you were the right personality type.”

“Really?” she said before she caught herself. Immediately lowering her eyes, she wished she wasn’t prone to sometimes saying things without thinking. It was just that she was nothing like Mrs. Rogers. She didn’t rule with an iron fist or try to intimidate people, as Mrs. Dennison had alluded to her predecessor doing in their meeting this morning. She had found that courtesy and respect worked best.

When she heard deep, masculine laughter, she looked back up and was caught off guard by the mirth she saw behind those golden brown eyes. Was he laughing at her?

He stopped laughing and smiled. “I inherited Mrs. Rogers. She worked for my father, and although she was extremely good at her job, she always thought of me as being a six-year-old child who needed her guidance. We only worked well together because I allowed her to think she was in control. When she said she was retiring, I wasn’t exactly upset by the news. Maria knew I wanted competence in my assistant, but not an alpha type who wanted to laud her position over the rest of the staff.”

“Oh, I see,” she said, feeling slightly relieved. She had to admit she had been worried that she would be found lacking in some way because he thought Mrs. Rogers had walked on water. It was nice to know that she would be judged on her own merits.

“I’m not sure you do.” In a nanosecond, his tone went from fun to all business.

“My brother was right about one thing… I am an exacting taskmaster. I expect my employees, and especially you, as my assistant, to be loyal to a fault and to carry out my instructions to a tee. I may have given Mrs. Rogers some leeway due to her history with the company, but that doesn’t pertain to you. I don’t want you to walk in her shoes. I want you to walk as if my shoes are the only ones that matter.”

“Of course,” she said, taking a gulp. “I understand perfectly, Mr. Nelson.

“Good. Now, I would like for you to call me Derek. We are going to be working very clo
sely together, and being on a first name basis, I can assure you, will in no way diminish my authority in the office.”

She blinked. He was very direct and to the point. “Thank you, Derek.”

“Now on to the next item. The holiday party will be held the Friday night before Christmas. It’s a massive affair. All our home office employees and their partners are invited. Mrs. Rogers felt that it was a waste of company funds. Regardless of what I told her, she always tried to scrimp on the catering and the entertainment. Although I did allow her a great deal of freedom in many things, I was adamant that the party be lavish and something my employees would enjoy and remember. I actually think she left when she did because she didn’t want to have to battle me over the particulars again this year. I would like you to start working on it right away. The reports and personnel issues on your list are things we can discuss over the next few days, after you’ve had a chance to get acclimated with the office and are able to access our systems.”

“I will check her files just to see what has been done in the past. Do you have a budget for me to work with? I know you said lavish, but I want to be sure I understand your definition of the word.”

“It’s in the file. You can add 30 percent to what was spent last year. However, if you find you’re getting close to budget, just let me know, and if I like your ideas, I can adjust it.”

They talked a little longer about some of his likes and dislikes, including his pet peeve, lateness. She made a mental note to be sure to set her alarm a half hour earlier just to be sure she was in the office earlier than she had already planned. She like that he had an open door policy with his employees. However, it was her job to make sure they went through the proper channels before bringing their grievances to him, without making it seem like they were being given the runaround. She would check with Mrs. Dennison for some history on how she and Mrs. Rogers had handled these types of situations.
