Taking What’s Theirs
Abby is drawn to the dark, handsome stranger that wants to buy her a drink and makes it no secret that he wants to take her back to his hotel room. Meeting men at bars has never been her thing, but this weekend, it’s her cousin’s bachelorette party, and she’s promised to stow her inhibitions. This man that makes her blood run hot is not only charismatic and furiously sexy, but scorches her with dark blue eyes that demand nothing less than all of her.
In a moment of weakness, she acts on her desires and submits herself to him with an eagerness that shocks her. As the sun rises, Abby awakes from a night with a man who not only indulges in the kind of kinky sex she has only read about in books, but wants her for something more erotic and taboo than she could have ever imagined. When he invites his two brothers to join them, will she go or stay? She can say no to brothers, Seth, Rod, and Jamie Owens, but does she want to?

Chapter One
Abby wheeled her suitcase out from her bedroom and carried it down the stairs. Her mother and father were watching television in the living room. She stopped to say good bye.
“Leaving already?” her mother said, turning to where Abby was standing in the doorway.
“Jessica’s picking me up. She just called and said she’d be here in five minutes.”
“Keep your wits about you, Abigail,” her father said, frowning. “Atlantic City at night can be dangerous. Stay on the boardwalk and around the casinos. You’re going to a club at the casino you’re staying at, right?
“I will be careful. I promise. And I told you we’re going to the Showboat and the club is next door at the Taj. So we won’t have to walk far. I think there may even be a walkway between the two casinos.”
“Well, just stay with the group,” her father ordered, and turned back to the show he was watching.
“Tell Chrissie I said hello and I hope she has a fun time at her bachelorette party.” Her mother smiled, trying to take the edge off her father’s words. “At least she’s staying close to home. I was talking to my friend Ann, and she said her daughter is going to Miami for her bachelorette party. Girls these days really feel the need to spend a lot of money on their own entertainment before the wedding. Even the showers are held in restaurants with a per-head charge. I don’t know how they afford it.”
“Things are different now, Mom. Most of the girls are working and pay for it themselves. No one gets married before they’re twenty-five anymore. Chrissie’s twenty-seven.”
She envied her cousin for having her life so together. Chrissie had known her soon-to-be husband, Joe, since they were freshmen in high school. He was a car mechanic and made pretty good money. Chrissie had graduated from college with a communications degree and found a job as an intern for a large insurance company. They had already put a down payment on a house. She and Joe had been living together for the last couple years, so they had all the essentials.
Before her mother could respond, Abby heard her phone ring and answered it. “Yes. Be right out.”
Turning back to her parents, she said, “Jessica’s here. I’ll see you sometime Monday afternoon. Love you. Bye.”
She wheeled her suitcase out the front door with a sigh of relief. She knew as long as she lived at home, her parents would treat her like she was sixteen. However, she was twenty-two years old and should be able to do whatever she wanted without her parent’s approval. And she did on occasion, but it wasn’t easy.
She had thought when she graduated from high school she would be going away to a four-year college. But since her dad had lost his job six months prior to her graduation, money had been tight and she had opted to go to the local co
mmunity college for a couple years. That had turned into four years since she could only afford to go part time. She had been working full-time during the day as a waitress at the local Shenanigans to help with expenses, including the board she insisted on paying her parents. There was also tuition and maintaining her secondhand Ford Escort that she used to get her back and forth to school and work. Luckily the tips were good. However, for now, she had put all hope of continuing her studies in business administration on hold.
Abby opened the back door of Jessica’s new Sebring convertible. Her college graduation present. She found a spot for her suitcase before she slid into the front passenger seat. Jessica had returned from college with her degree in liberal arts and had decided to take the summer off from looking for a job. Luckily, her father owned his own business so if Jessica had wanted a job, one was waiting for her. It also helped that she had a trust fund from her grandparents and wasn’t pressed for money.
Although Abby couldn’t help being slightly envious of her friend, she didn’t begrudge Jessica for having no worries about paying back school loans or having a career waiting for her if she wanted it. With all her privilege, she was still one of the most loyal and fun people she knew. This weekend all Abby wanted to do was pretend she was someone else and Jessica was the perfect person to help her do just that.
“Are you ready to party?” Jessica asked, her eyes alight with excitement.
“Party is my middle name.” Abby laughed.
“Right. And the Pope’s not Catholic.” Jessica smirked.
Ignoring her comment, Abby said, “Are we still going to meet up with Chrissie and the girls?”
“I told her that I wanted to drive my own car. This way we can leave whenever we want to or stay as long as we want. You know how I hate to be completely tied to other people’s plans.”
“How many girls ended up going anyway? The last time I talked to Chrissie, it was just Joanne, Sarah, and Tish, as well as us.”
“They’re still going, but Katie and Melissa decided to go too. Haven’t you talked to your cousin at all?”
“I’ve been busy taking extra shifts now that classes are over. She did send a few text messages. She didn’t give me the impression she was all that excited about going.”
“I think she’s disappointed she’s not flying off to some exotic location. She’s lucky we live near Atlantic City, where the clubs are full of hot guys on the weekends.”
“I’m sure you’ll have no problem finding the hot guys or them finding you,” Abby said with a smile. “Men seem to gravitate toward you.”
Jessica not only had long, black, silky hair and a lithe figure, she also had a beautiful face and a great personality. She was also an extrovert who could talk to anyone about almost anything. Never shy or unsure of herself, she had made friends easy. Abby had always admired that about her. She wished she could have been more like her instead of embracing the role of the wallflower with little self-confidence.
She knew it stemmed from being overweight as an adolescent. Shy and uncomfortable around boys, she had spent most of her time worrying about what to wear so she didn’t look as fat.
She and Jessica had met when they were freshman in high school. Abby still wasn’t sure exactly why Jessica had chosen her to be her friend, but she had and they had been almost inseparable until Jessica had left for college. No one in Jessica’s clique ever had a problem finding boyfriends. They tried to hook her up until she had finally begged them to stop. It was embarrassing, and she grew tired of the eventual rejection that always ensued after a date with a guy who would much rather be with Jessica or one of her friends.
“They gravitate toward you too, you know. You’ve had more than your share of dates in the last few years. Hell, when I came home for winter break last year, I thought that guy, Jason, was going to ask you to marry him.”
She didn’t want to think about Jason. He was nice, but he had never really been her type. She had told him she wasn’t interested in anything serious, but he had still pursued her. She had broken it off after she had finally gone all the way with him and had felt nothing but regret. She knew she had hurt him, but it wasn’t fair to either of them to continue when she knew there was no hope of a future together.
“We weren’t compatible. But let’s not talk about him. I just want to relax and enjoy this weekend. I hope Chrissie enjoys herself.”
“Just remember, whatever happens stays between all of us. Chrissie is looking to have a final fling, and it wouldn’t do for Joe to ever find out. I’m not saying she’s going to cheat on him, like going to bed with another guy, but I know she plans to do some heavy flirting.”
“I think that’s dangerous. I mean what if he finds out?”
“He won’t find out. And, please, don’t be the sane one this weekend. Just let things happen. I know you have a moral conscience about most things, but this weekend can you just keep it in your suitcase?”
“I’m not that bad, am I?”
“No. You’re not that bad. In fact, sometimes you’ve actually surprised me. Just promise me you’ll let go a little and not overthink everything.”
“I will. I promise.”
She smiled inwardly. Jessica had always been a bit on the wild and kinky side. Although Abby had pretended to be shocked most of the time, secretly she had been in awe of Jessica’s lack of inhibitions. And that had never been more true than when she introduced her to Lady Lisa’s Lingerie Store, which sold a whole lot more than lingerie. It had opened her eyes to her own kinky side. Jessica had been quite pleased with herself when Abby had finally admitted she was glad her friend had forced her outside her comfort zone.
In her dreams she was that fun and crazy girl who was the life of the party. Unfortunately, in many ways she was still the fat kid that didn’t want a boy to think she was interested in them for fear they would laugh at her. She had tried countless diets, but none of them had worked for her. The fact was she wasn’t mentally ready to lose weight until after the end-of-summer formal that was a rite of passage for the kids whose families could afford a country club membership. Most of her friends that were also Jessica’s friends had been from affluent families. She had been lucky that Jessica’s parents had practically adopted her and had taken her to the country club under their membership. Jessica had been insistent she go to the formal, and she wasn’t taking no for an answer.
She looked over at Jessica, who was singing to the radio, and closed her eyes for a moment as her mind drifted back to the night of the formal and everything that had ensued. It was a memory near and dear to her heart and without Jessica, she would have never attended.
She knew whoever Jessica coerced into taking her would act like he was doing her a favor all night. But the thought of going was exciting, and she had wanted to attend, especially since she had not gone to any of her high school dances. In the end, Jessica had found her a date and if Abby didn’t go, she wasn’t going.
She begged that she had nothing to wear, but that argument was put to rest when Jessica told her that her mother had already bought her a dress. When her own mother told her that it would be rude not go since everyone had gone out of their way for her, she had relented gracefully, all the while doing a happy dance in her head. She promised herself, no matter what, she would enjoy the evening and not let her so-called date ruin it for her.
The night of the formal, Jessica, her boyfriend, Marty, and a friend of his from college who had been interning with him for the summer at a local law firm came to pick her up. Although Jessica had told her she had never met his friend, she had somehow convinced Marty to ask him to take Abby.
One look at Jamie Owens and she knew he must have owed Marty big time for something because a guy that looked that way he did would never take some girl he didn’t know to a formal dance, or anywhere for that matter. He was not just good looking. He was deep-down, gut-wrenchingly handsome. His dark brown wavy hair was longish to his collar and fell haphazardly just above his big brown ey
es that were set against a tan complexion with boyishly rosy cheeks. Full lips and even, white teeth had smiled back at her as he took her hand when they were introduced. They must have prepared him for her because his eyes didn’t register the disappointment she knew he must have felt when he realized she was not a looker like Jessica. How pathetic she must have appeared—a dumpy teenage girl in a dress far too frilly with a stupid look of adoration on her face.
She watched, speechless, as he slipped a corsage on her wrist with her mother and father smiling in the background. She had stuttered a thank-you. Then to her horror, her mother had pulled out a camera and started taking pictures that she had found not only embarrassing, but downright mortifying. To his credit, Jamie had smiled and said all the right things to her parents. Unlike her, he appeared to be in his element and had insisted on taking a picture of her with her parents.
When he opened the backdoor to the car for her, he had helped her retrieve the bottom of her full dress so it would not get caught in the door. She had murmured a quick thank-you, avoiding eye contact for fear he would see how completely awestruck she was. He was too perfect. He couldn’t be real. But his hand on her arm was very real and tonight he was her date. Immediately, her nerves had gone into hyper overdrive as every shy bone in her body had awakened.
Once they were settled inside the car, he had presented her with what appeared to be a genuine smile that lit up his entire face. He was acting like he was glad to be her date and hadn’t been drafted against his will. She still couldn’t comprehend how someone like him had been convinced to take someone like her to what he must have seen as a waste of his time.
